Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent
"Each batch yields 16 ounces. Make two batches of this recipe and store the 32 ounces of detergent in a covered container.
- 1 bar of shaved bar soap (Ivory, ZOTE, Fels-Naptha)
- 1/2 cup of borax
- 1/2 cup of washing soda
(**note** you only need to use 2 tablespoons of this homemade detergent per load, although you can use more for heavily soiled loads)
Purchase all these ingredients at the local grocery store to make your detergent:
- 1 – 55 ounce box of Arm & Hammer® Super Washing Soda
- 1 – 76 ounce box of 20 Mule Team® Borax
- 1 – 10 pack of 4.5 ounce bars of Ivory® Bar Soap (you can use cheaper soap ) Other brands of commonly used bar soaps include Pure & Natural®, Fels-Naptha® and/or ZOTE®. Both ZOTE® and Fels-Naptha® are made for and sold as “laundry bar soap.”)

Utilizing more detergent than you need makes your clothes less clean since some of them remain behind in your clothes. Not only will modest quantities get your clothes clean, but they'll be all the more honest since they'll have much less detergent left in the fabric.
